Caicedo was sent off during Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Arsenal at Stamford Bridge and is now set to miss three crucial Premier League fixtures.
The Ecuadorian received a straight red card for a challenge, triggering a three-game ban that rules him out of Chelsea’s matches against Leeds United, Bournemouth, and Everton.
What Maresca said
Speaking during his pre-match press conference ahead of Wednesday’s clash against Leeds, Maresca expressed full confidence in Santos’ ability to fill the gap left by Caicedo.
“Andrey Santos is ready to replace Caicedo. His position is playing as a number six, like Moi. He is ready,” Maresca said.
The statement marks a major vote of confidence in the 20-year-old, who has been pushing for more minutes since returning from his loan spell.
Maresca also highlighted another emerging talent who could be called upon if needed.
He added, “One that can play well in that position is Josh Acheampong, but we will see.”
Acheampong, a versatile academy graduate, has impressed the Chelsea staff with his tactical intelligence and composure, making him a possible reinforcement during Caicedo’s absence.
With Caicedo unavailable for the next three games, Chelsea will look to rely on youth and depth in a demanding stretch of the season.
The clash with Leeds United offers the Brazilian a major opportunity to stake his claim in the Chelsea midfield.
