Wedding Plans Cut Short As Man Is Murdered Days To Wedding in Violent Ohafia Community Clash

A young man, identified as Mr Igwe Akuma of the Ndi Uma compound, was killed on Friday following a violent outbreak in Okon-Aku community, Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State.
The incident sparked unrest in the area, with angry youths reportedly setting houses, vehicles and other personal property belonging to some residents on fire.

The Udumeze of Ohafia, led by Ezie Ohamoha Awa Orji Udonsi, in conjunction with the Ohafia Council of Monarchs, condemned the killing and the subsequent acts of arson in a statement issued on Saturday.

According to the traditional institution, the deceased was only days away from his wedding before his life was abruptly cut short. The council described the murder as senseless and tragic, offering condolences to the bereaved family.

“The Udumeze condemns in its entirety the gruesome murder of a young Ohafian who was said to be getting married in a few days,” the statement said, stressing that there was no excuse for the killing of an Ohafia indigene under any circumstance, regardless of provocation.

The council further noted that violence, destruction and bloodshed were not acceptable ways to usher in a new year, urging restraint and dialogue.

Appealing for calm between the Ndi Owom and Ndi Uma compounds, the Udumeze said it had begun engagement with relevant security agencies to ensure the situation does not escalate further.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Abia State Command, DSP Maureen Chinaka, told DAILY POST that the Divisional Police Officer in Ohafia led a team of officers to the area, resulting in the arrest of some suspects.

She added that two police tactical teams have been deployed to Okon-Aku community to restore and maintain law and order, while those arrested are currently being interrogated in connection with the crisis.
