What happened to Congo FA President?
Jean-Guy Blaise Mayolas, president of the Congolese Football Federation (FECOFOOT), was convicted by a court in Brazzaville for several financial crimes, including money laundering, embezzlement, forgery, and the use of forged documents.
Investigators found that more than $1.3 million in funds provided by FIFA—including COVID-19 relief money meant for football development—was misappropriated.
The court handed the verdict in Mayolas’ absence, and the case also implicated members of his family. There are also reports that his wife and son were also given life sentences for their involvement in the financial scheme.
However other federation officials were not spared, as FECOFOOT’s general secretary and treasurer received five-year prison terms for their roles in the scandal. The case has sent shockwaves across African football, highlighting ongoing concerns about financial transparency and governance within football federations.
There have always been clear rules that funds from FIFA are intended to develop the sport at grassroots and national levels, and the misuse of such resources has raised questions about oversight and accountability in football administration.
