Kebbi lawmaker joins APC, blames PDP’s deepening internal crisis

A member of the House of Representatives, Ibrahim Mohammed, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), pointing to ongoing leadership disputes and internal divisions within his former party.

Mohammed, who represents the Birnin Kebbi, Kalgo, and Bunza Federal Constituency of Kebbi State, announced his decision in a statement on Tuesday, describing the PDP as being overwhelmed by unresolved crises that have hindered its effectiveness.

“The persistent leadership crisis and internal conflicts within the party have made it increasingly difficult for committed members like myself to contribute meaningfully to its growth and democratic responsibilities,” he said.

He further explained that his decision came after extensive engagement with his constituents and political allies across the constituency.

“After wide consultations with my constituents and key stakeholders, I have resolved to join the All Progressives Congress in the best interest of my people and to enhance my capacity to deliver effective representation,” he stated.

The lawmaker confirmed that he has formally informed his ward executives in Nasarawa I Ward, Birnin Kebbi, of his resignation from the PDP, and has also notified the leadership of the House of Representatives of his defection.

Mohammed’s move is part of a broader pattern of high-profile exits from the PDP in Kebbi and other parts of the country, highlighting growing concerns over instability within the opposition party.

In Kebbi State, recent internal tensions have been further aggravated by the resignation of the party’s State Secretary, Abubakar Bawa Kalgo, adding to fears about the party’s cohesion and direction.

Political observers note that persistent factional disputes and court battles over leadership positions have weakened confidence among party members, prompting several elected officials to seek new political alignments.

Meanwhile, the APC continues to strengthen its foothold in Kebbi State, with Mohammed’s defection expected to boost its presence in the National Assembly.

With the 2027 general elections approaching, analysts warn that more defections could occur if the PDP fails to resolve its internal challenges and unite its ranks.
