Several bandits were killed during a firefight involving the convoy of the General Officer Commanding 8 Division and the Commander of Sector 2, Operation Fansan Yamma, after encountering fleeing terrorists in Tsafe Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

According to counter-insurgency analyst Zagazola Makama, security sources said the incident occurred at about 4:30 p.m. on April 6, 2026, as the General Officer Commanding (GOC) was returning from an operational visit to assess the security situation and troops deployed at Kulchin Kalgo and FOB Danjibga.
Upon reaching Maitashi village, the convoy reportedly encountered fleeing terrorists, leading to an exchange of gunfire.
During the engagement, troops successfully neutralised several of the assailants and recovered weapons, ammunition, as well as motorcycles.
“However, one soldier sustained gunshot wounds and was evacuated to Keta Healthcare Centre, where he was later confirmed dead,” the security expert said.
The area was subsequently secured by troops before the convoy continued to Gusau, while operations in the area remain ongoing.
In a related development, Amnesty International reported on Sunday that at least 150 people, mostly women and children, were abducted when gunmen attacked the villages of Kurfa Danya and Kurfan Magaji in Zamfara State last Thursday.
The organisation said residents of the affected communities described living in constant fear, feeling helpless and perpetually on edge amid the ongoing violence.
The attacks underscore what many have described as Nigeria’s “forgotten conflict”, a persistent wave of insecurity in the northwest that continues to devastate rural communities.
Despite repeated assurances by Nigerian authorities that efforts are underway to address the crisis, the rising death toll and frequency of mass abductions highlight the ongoing challenges in restoring security to the region.
