Table Tennis: Team Egypt overpower Nigeria to secure spot in London

Team Egypt has advanced to the main draw of the World Team Championships following a commanding 3-0 victory against continental rivals Nigeria in the preliminary round of the Men’s Team.

Egypt’s breakthrough came after finishing second in Group 11 with five points, just one behind leaders Kazakhstan. That set up a decisive clash with Nigeria for a place in the last 32, where Egypt’s depth and quality proved decisive.

Youssef Abdelaziz opened the tie with a straight-sets win over Olajide Omotayo, continuing his impressive run of form. The headline encounter featured Omar Assar against Quadri Aruna in their 25th career meeting.

In a tightly contested battle, Assar prevailed to claim his sixth consecutive victory over the Nigerian star. Rising talent and reigning African youth champion, Badr Mostafa, sealed Egypt’s triumph with a clinical 3–0 win over Kuti Matthew.

With this result, the Assar-led squad remains the only African men’s team left in contention in London.

Egypt’s women’s team also delivered a flawless campaign, topping Group 3 to advance into the main draw without the rigours of the preliminary round.

Led by Dina Meshref and supported by Mariam Alhidaby, Hana Goda, and Farida Badawy, the team recorded perfect 3–0 wins against South Africa, Algeria, and Belgium. Their dominant performance cements them as the only African women’s team in the knockout stages.

Elsewhere, Algeria’s women secured a morale-boosting win over South Africa in their last group match, while men’s teams from Madagascar, Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, Angola, and Cameroon each registered victories in the group stage, bringing their campaign in London to an end.

As the World Team Championships move from the Copper Box Arena to the iconic Ovo Arena, Wembley, Egypt’s men and women stand tall as Africa’s flagbearers, ready to challenge the world’s elite in the knockout rounds.
